Racing Toward Recovery

Guy Gosselin, LCSW-LADC-CCS takes a moment to catch up with Heather

Everyone who moves forward with treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) approaches it differently. For Heather, the term “forward” was not just a direction, it was her momentum and motivation. Last year she made the courageous decision to enter treatment at MaineHealth Behavioral Health (MHBH) in Biddeford.

The decision changed her life forever.

Heather had reached a point where she recognized that her substance use was having a negative impact on her life and on the people around her. She entered her first day in treatment uncertain what to expect.

“I was excited for help and also nervous that it might be too strict,” Heather said. “Beyond all that I felt hopeful that the program would be able to help me.” The treatment included counseling and group therapy. “One of the most difficult parts was when a family member met with my counselor, but it was part of the process.”

Group therapy was one part of treatment that Heather appreciated because it helps participants feel more connected and less alone in their journey. “It was helpful to have an opportunity to relate to others.”

Guy Gosselin, LCSW-LADC-CCS led group sessions Heather attended and felt privileged to watch her grow. “Heather truly embraced treatment,” Guy said. “She was able to incorporate a strong self-care regimen for herself and her son while she was in treatment. She shared positive outcomes during group sessions, and as a result, it motivated other group members to work on their own recovery.”

Heather appreciated Guy’s friendly demeanor and that he always made her feel seen or that what she had to say had value.
