Philanthropy Activity and Donor Listings

We are pleased to celebrate a landmark year for MaineHealth Behavioral Health philanthropy, marked by exceptional community support and significant achievements across our events and initiatives. Our heartfelt thanks go to the MHBH Development Committee members for their dedication and hard work, which were instrumental in achieving this success. Here’s a look back at our notable accomplishments spanning July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025:

Signs of Hope Fundraiser Celebrates Resilience and Community

On July 17, more than 150 friends of MaineHealth Behavioral Health (MHBH) gathered at the Portland Country Club for the 17th annual Signs of Hope fundraiser. MHBH President Kelly Barton and co-host Sheri Boulos welcomed guests before Liv, a resident at our Community Rehabilitation Home in Biddeford, shared her inspiring story. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age four and schizoaffective disorder at 11, Liv also navigates anxiety disorder and OCD. Now 27, she proudly shares milestones such as learning to drive, taking culinary classes at community college, and having a boyfriend, charming the audience with her honesty and joy. Several care team members who have supported Liv were present, making the moment especially meaningful.
The event concluded with MHBH Development Committee Chair Lucy Tucker presenting an award to the MaineHealth Center for Trauma, Resilience and Innovation, honoring their heroism following the tragic Lewiston mass shootings.

Leadership Giving Society

On March 4, the Philanthropy Office hosted the annual Leadership Giving Society (LGS) State of MHBH Presidential Briefing at the MaineHealth Glickman Lauder Center of Excellence. Founded in 2023, the LGS honors donors who give $1,000+ annually to the Behavioral Health Fund, supporting vital programs and services. Now in its second year, the Society includes 45 members, 17 of whom are MaineHealth employees.
The breakfast program featured remarks from Local Board Chair Dr. Karen Simone, LGS Chair Sean Burke, MHBH President Kelly Barton, and Dr. Melissa Bowker-Kinley, VP of Medical Affairs for Child & Adolescent Services. Together, they shared program updates, client stories, and the impact of philanthropy in advancing behavioral health care.

Behavioral Health E-Campaign Exceeds Goal

The second annual MHBH Employee Campaign wrapped up March 31, raising more than $24,000 from 44 employee donors — well above the $18,000 goal and last year’s total. The eight-week effort supports the Behavioral Health Annual Fund, providing flexible resources for critical services. Weekly prize drawings added fun to the campaign, with the grand prize — an outdoor movie night — donated by the anonymous winner to Spring Harbor’s Child & Adolescent Services. Thank you to all who gave and to the community partners who contributed prizes!

If you or a community partner would like to donate a prize for next year’s campaign, please contact Megan Bagdasarian.

Supportive Housing Gives Hope — and Stability — to Clients Like Joe

At MHBH, we know that recovery isn’t possible without safe, stable housing. Every day, we work to meet the growing need for supportive residential programs that help people living with complex mental health challenges receive the care they need in a place they can call home.

One of those people is Joe. After spending six months at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center, Joe transitioned into one of our residential treatment programs. The move was life changing — not only for Joe, but also for his family.

“It feels unbelievable to us that Joe is receiving all of this care and support, in a stable housing arrangement,” his sister shared. “It seems miraculous that he is in a situation that so fully caters to his needs, when there are so few openings of this type, and we are really, really grateful.”

Stories like Joe’s highlight the impact of your generosity. Gifts to the Behavioral Health Annual Fund expand access to safe housing, ongoing behavioral health care, and the hope of a brighter future. Together, we can ensure that more people like Joe and his family experience the life-changing stability they deserve.

Let’s Ride! Bikers for Behavioral Health Raises $3,000

On October 19, bikers hit the open road for the inaugural Let’s Ride: Bikers for Behavioral Health benefit, raising more than $3,000 for essential mental health services.

The scenic 185-mile ride began at MaineHealth Franklin Hospital in Farmington, with a stop at MaineHealth Memorial Hospital in North Conway before ending at MaineHealth Behavioral Health at Spring Harbor in Westbrook. Riders and supporters capped the day with live music, good food, and raffle prizes donated by generous community partners.

By turning their passion for riding into purpose, participants helped fuel hope and expand access to behavioral health care across our communities.

Holiday Cheer That Lasts All Year

For patients spending the holidays in treatment, a small gift can mean the world. A warm scarf, a favorite snack, or simply knowing someone cares can bring comfort and hope during what is often a difficult season. That’s the heart of the Holiday Partners Program — a tradition that has grown into a year-round source of support for our patients.

This past November, more than 125 friends and supporters gathered at Shipyard Brewery for Making Spirits Bright, presented by Great Diamond Partners. Together, they raised over $20,000 to fuel the Holiday Partners Program. With enthusiastic leadership from our event hosts, and generous contributions from sponsors and local businesses, the evening was filled with joy, gratitude, and a shared commitment to making a difference.

The holiday spirit continued on December 19, when MHBH staff, members of the Executive Leadership Team, and the Philanthropy Committee came together at MHBH at Spring Harbor for the annual gift bag stuffing party. With festive music, a shared meal, and plenty of laughter, volunteers packed thoughtful gifts for patients across our system — spreading warmth and cheer during a time when it’s needed most.

Altogether, more than $30,000 was raised through Making Spirits Bright and general donations, making this our most successful season yet. But the true impact goes far beyond the holidays. Thanks to your generosity, the Holiday Partners Program now provides essentials like eyeglasses, medication co-pays, gas cards, and warm clothing year-round — meeting critical needs that help patients focus on healing.

Your gifts ensure that individuals facing mental health challenges know they are not alone. Together, we’re proving that healing isn’t just a season — it’s a journey made brighter by community.

An Evening of Possibility Raises $106,000 for Autism Care

On September 27, An Evening of Possibility brought together community members in support of the Glickman Lauder Center of Excellence in Autism and Developmental Disorders. Emceed by Miss Maine USA Ambassador Rosie Haibon, who shared her personal journey with autism, the event raised $106,000 to enhance therapy equipment, staff training, and safety measures.
We are deeply grateful to Ben Berry, Jordan Equipment, and all sponsors and donors whose generosity made this inspiring evening possible.
