Living Our Values in Transforming Behavioral Health
Welcome to the MaineHealth Behavioral Health (MHBH) Annual Report. As Maine’s largest behavioral health service provider, our mission is clear: to connect patients with the right care, at the right time, in the right place. Every day, we live our values of patient-centeredness, respect, integrity, excellence, ownership, and innovation as we work to transform behavioral health across our system.

Alex Keuroghlian, MD, MPH
This year has been one of meaningful transformation. We welcomed Dr. Alex Keuroghlian as Chief of MHBH and Chair of Psychiatry at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. His leadership and national expertise will help strengthen clinical care, expand teaching and research, and ensure equitable access for all patients. His vision aligns with ours: building a unified behavioral health system that delivers exceptional care across the continuum.
As the behavioral health entity for MaineHealth, we have taken bold steps toward that vision. This year, we embarked on the next phase of integration with colleagues at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. Guided by stakeholder engagement and careful planning, this multi-year effort will bring all clinical, operational, and administrative functions under one unified behavioral health team this fall. This milestone reflects the dedication of our care teams and represents a major accomplishment in the first year of this journey.
Our care team’s engagement is a cornerstone of innovation and ownership. With 87% participation in our annual experience survey—an 11% increase for care team and 25% for providers—we heard their voices clearly. Satisfaction improved across both groups, with top drivers of respect, care and concern for well-being, supportive leadership, and trust. This speaks volumes about the culture we continue to cultivate at MHBH.
Transformation has also been visible in our care environments. At MHBH at Spring Harbor, newly renovated children and adolescent units now provide safer, more patient-centered spaces with thoughtful attention to privacy and healing. We also celebrated the first graduates of our Psych Tech Apprenticeship and Nurse Residency programs—milestones that underscore our investment in the future behavioral health workforce.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our care team for their unwavering dedication to patients. Each day, you bring our values to life in the way you care, support, and advocate—making a profound difference in the lives of individuals and families across our communities. As you read the stories in this report, I hope you feel the same pride I do in the extraordinary work being done. Together, we are not only transforming behavioral health but also advancing our shared vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.
